A control lapses. Someone notices, eventually. That person raises it, chases the owner, gets the fix scheduled, confirms it landed, and updates the record. Multiply by every control, every framework, every quarter.

Each of those is an intervention, and each one requires a person to initiate it. Nothing self-corrects. The program is stable in exactly the way a patient on life support is stable: continuously, and only because something outside it is doing the work of keeping it that way.

This is not a criticism of the people doing it. They are the reason it holds at all. That is the problem. A system whose stability depends on sustained human attention has made attention the single point of failure, and attention is the scarcest resource in the building.

An immune system is organized the other way around.

It senses continuously rather than on a schedule. It handles ordinary variance without anyone deciding that it should. It remembers what it has already encountered, so the second exposure is cheaper than the first. And when something exceeds what it can resolve on its own, it escalates.

That last property is the one that matters here, and it is easy to miss.

Escalation is native to an immune system. It is not a limitation bolted on afterward. An immune system does not attempt surgery. It does not need to be restrained from attempting surgery. Knowing where its authority ends is part of the design, not a constraint on it.

Autonomy and human authority stop being a tradeoff.

This is where most conversations about autonomous systems go wrong. They treat autonomy as a dial. More autonomy means less human control. Less human control means more risk. So the discussion becomes an argument about the correct setting.

That framing is wrong, and the immune system shows why. It is highly autonomous and it has a hard boundary, and the boundary is not a reduction of its autonomy. The two are not on the same axis.

Compliance has exactly this shape. Sensing the environment, interpreting what changed, working out which controls and frameworks are affected, drafting the correction: none of that requires a human, and asking a human to do it is what created the capacity gap in the first place.

But a compliance certification is a legal assertion. Somebody has to be accountable for it. Not because the machine is untrustworthy, but because accountability is a thing only a person can hold.

Four stages are automatic. One is deliberate.

Any system that resolves this has to run a loop, and it has to know where the loop pauses.

Monitor. Examine the environment against every control in scope, continuously.

Reason. Interpret what changed, determine what it affects, assess the consequence.

Propose. Draft the correction, the policy, the evidence, or the rating.

Execute. Carry out the accepted work at machine scale.

Learn. Make the next cycle more precise than the last.

The gate sits between propose and execute, and it is a person. Everything operational runs with no human in the path. Everything that becomes an assertion waits for a named person to accept it.

That is the design, not a limitation on it. An immune system doesn't ask permission to do its job. It also knows when to call a doctor.
